Pitts Park is named in honor of Sam Pitts, a Clarkesville city councilman who lost his life battling a church fire during his service as a volunteer fireman.

Clarkesville's fresh, clean water supply comes from the Soque, which originates in the county and empties into the Chattahoochee River.
